which Remington 870 Accessories?

What brand makes the most solid built extension tubes and barrel shrouds?

I would like to find someone on gim with first hand experience modding these. I just want a 7 round tube and a barrel shroud for now. I would also like a pistol grip.

I can outfit it or just keep it for hunting and buy a "home defense" shotty.

Remington makes them for sale to the public...or try Choate Machine & Tool (available at MidwayUSA).

I've always liked the remington brand top folding police stock.

Get a Remington factory extension. They are much better built than most, and certainly none are markedly better. Make sure you use the bbl clamp.

As for the pistol grip and bbl shroud, I've never found a use for either.

I hear ya... I'm thinking of doing the tube extension and getting a shorter barrel. That way when I go hunting I can throw in the 26" barrel.

I'll probably do that and a side saddle for shells.

Re: which Remington 870 Accessories?

I did the swap bbl thing for a while. I finally ended up buying a couple of extra 870s and having them dedicated, 30" full, 28" mod, and 20" with the 3 shot extension.

I love 870s. I've built a few (from beat up Wingmaster to 'tacticool') and sold them. It's a lot of fun if not particularly a moneymaker!

What's "most solid built", I dunno. I can just tell you about my shotgun mods. Attached is a pic of my Remington 870 that I modified over 10 years ago. In case anybody wonders about the OD 550 cord wrapped around the buttstock, it's my quick & dirty efforts to add a side mounted sling point on the buttstock. I didn't like the way the shotgun handled with the bottom mounted sling. Yes, I could screw a sling swivel into the side of the stock, but didn't bother.

I used a Choate Tool pistol grip buttstock, a Surefire (Laser Products) forend, a Remington slug barrel, a Choate mag tube extension, a side saddle, an enlarged safety button, and also wimped out & installed a couple mercury recoil absorbers in the buttstock. I also polished (lapped) the bolt & action bars to reduce cycling friction. I think I got most of the stuff from Brownells.

A few things to watch out for:
1) If you add a magazine tube extension, you may need a longer magazine spring. These are readily available.

2) In order to add a mag tube extension that works (added shells aren't blocked by the "dimples" that Remington puts in the end of the factory mag tube), you will need to remove the dimples. This can be done by careful drilling, or you can use a Dremel tool to grind away the inside of the dimples until shells easily clear them.

3) If you mount a side-saddle, don't grunt the screws down too tight - you can make it very difficult (or impossible) to cycle the action. Go with a reasonable tightness, plus some blue (non-permanent) thread locker adhesive (Loctite).

Re: which Remington 870 Accessories?

Factory Remmy extensions come with the spring.

Only the (IMO junky) Express models have the dimples, no worries with a Wingmaster or Police. Plus the action is already lapped, and the trigger housing isn't plastic.

The Surefire foreend is an outstanding product. I highly recommend it.

Bought my first 870 yesterday, an Express with 28" vent rib and rem choke for $100. The receiver has the X stamp. Could not find any "dimples" inside the tube.
The factory extensions are over $100 and nearly impossible to find it seems. Maybe I'll get one of these from Tanks. http://www.tanksrifleshop.com/remshotgun.htm Heavy duty magazine extension.

That's all I want to do with it, buy a 18 1/2" cyl bore barrel and a 2 round extension with clamp. Do I really need a clamp for just a short extension?

I'll just keep the existing barrel for turkey hunting.

I'm more of a sxs guy as far as defensive shotguns go, but one thing I really like about this 870 is that I can carry it effortlessly with 2 fingers around the tube just forward of the receiver. I don't think I'll put a sling on it.

Hoarder,

(nice to see you around, it's been a while)

You want the bbl clamp. If you don't have it, you're liable to bang the exension on something (it sticks out farther than the bbl). That could strip the threads out on either the mag tube or the extension.

My local shop sells the genuine Remington extensions for 75 bucks, and they had a pile of them last time I checked. You can also check Hoplight, Inc (they advertise in SGN) and Bachman Pawn (in Dallas). They carry them at the same price. Or you can check out the Equipment Exchange at www.ar15.com I've picked up a few there in the 50frn range.

Thanks for the tips, eat_beef. I think I found a used one. The barrels are scarce too. Most places are sold out. I might also get a bird barrel and chop down if I find one cheap. I hope all is well with you.
